Session 1: General Principles and Practices of UDL


Our first meeting was held Wednesday, March 9th between 3:00PM and 5:00PM.

Introduction and agenda for  the first meeting by Michael Siller

Antonia Levy (Office of Faculty Development, CUNY School of Professional Studies) started off the session with a general introduction on the principles and practices of Universal Design.

Assignments for this session 
a) Read the attached book chapter from Sheryl Burgstahler’s book entitled “Universal Design in Higher Education”
b) Please bring the syllabus of one of your courses to this meeting.
c) Review the following two websites:

- National Center on Universal Design for Learning (UDL): http://www.udlcenter.org/aboutudl/udlguidelines [This site includes a great overview of UDL guidelines]

During this TLC, participants were asked to come up with one specific ‘learning outcome’ from  one of their courses, and redesign their teaching methods to be consistent with the principles and practices of Universal Design. To facilitate their selection of appropriate learning outcomes, Meredith Reitman (Hunter’s Director of Assessment) was invited to present on this topic.
